Leviticus 15:16-17
In Leviticus 15 God lays out a number of rules regarding bodily discharges. This particular one refers to the time when a man has an emission of semen. He is unclean, so he must stay away from women (and other people) until the semen has passed. It is interesting to note that while God deals with these private and sexual issues in a direct way He does so in a very polite, dignified fashion.
There is a reason for this, because it is not really the case that the man is ejaculating without having intercourse. Rather, this verse seems to be talking about a nocturnal emission (the involuntary release of sperm from the penis while sleeping) or masturbation. However, a lot of people have tried to read this record into more general passages about lust and masturbation and warned young men that they will suffer impotence or blindness if they engage in this sinful practice.
This is an extremely unfortunate interpretation of this record. The problem with this is that it would imply that the Lord took Onan’s life because he was masturbating, when in fact he was simply doing what was required of him as a brother-in-law to his dead brother’s wife. He withdrew his penis before he ejaculated so that his deceased brother’s wife would not conceive a child.
Leviticus 20:10-12
Many people wonder if the Bible says anything about masturbation. The fact is that it doesn’t explicitly mention masturbation, but it does discuss other ways that men ejaculate. Leviticus 20:10-12 talks about a discharge of semen from a man’s penis and other places. This can be caused by wet dreams, nocturnal emissions (under the law, these made a man unclean), or masturbation.
The man who has the discharge of semen from his body must bathe in water and be unclean until evening. Also, “every garment, and every skin” where there is seminal emission must be washed. This is a serious violation of God’s commandments and should be avoided by believers.
Leviticus 15:16-17 says that if a man ejaculates without having sexual relations with a woman, he and the woman must both bathe in water to be unclean until evening. This is probably referring to wet dreams or nocturnal emissions, but the scripture doesn’t specifically name either of these things. It could also be describing masturbation, since it is a way that men can ejaculate without having sexual intercourse.
However, Onan was not slain because he was masturbating. The Lord killed him because he denied a child to his dead brother’s wife Tamar. When he went to bed with Tamar, Onan knew that the children she conceived would not count as his sons. So, he deliberately spilled his semen on the ground to prevent her from getting pregnant.
Leviticus 21:9-10

The Lord considered this to be evil, and He killed Onan.
