Trying new sexual positions can lead to orgasms, so don’t be afraid to experiment. The G-spot is a sensitive area that needs stimulation to reach orgasm.
A recent study found that the classic missionary position is the best sex position for heterosexual women to get orgasms. The researchers from private gynaecology clinic New H Medical in New York studied blood flow in the woman’s clitoris in different sexual positions.
Woman-on-Top
Woman-on-top positions can be a bit scary for men and women alike, but they are often one of the best ways to stimulate your vulva during sex. That’s because they can directly hit your clitoris, which is a key part of what makes sex feel like sex—and they can also be especially effective for people who aren’t orgasm-prone.
The classic doggy style (the man penetrating the woman’s legs from behind) is an easy place to start, but you can add a lot of variety by varying the angle or position of the penetration and the legs’ movement. You can even ask your partner to lift their hips to change the angle of the penetration and to expose different textures to grind against.
This move is great for people with sensitive vulvas, too, because it doesn’t put too much pressure on the area. And it’s also ideal for people who require clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm because it’s pretty direct, says holistic sexuality educator and sexual health coach Lisa Hochberger.
If you’re looking for a deeper sensation, try the reverse cowgirl position, which is a little more advanced than the basic missionary. In this position, the woman on top bends her leg slightly back to straddle him with just one knee. Then, she rubs her clitoral hood against his thigh while he strokes and grinds her. It’s a deliciously yummy way to bring her to orgasm.
Rear Entry
The missionary sex position, which has the man enter her from behind, isn’t great for orgasming — it’s too easy for the man to forget to stimulate her clitoris. To spice up this position try a few extra tricks like having the woman cross her ankles, or have her sit in the corner of the bed and enter from there (this is called the butterfly position).
Another way to make this position more orgasm-friendly is to add pillows under the woman’s hips (especially for the clitoral area), which increase the friction. One of our favorites is the Rock Away position, in which the man sits upright against a headboard and the woman lies on her back in his lap. She then scissors her legs open to straddle his pelvis and create a frenzy of friction against the length of her vulva.
For even more clitoral stimulation try the spooning sex position, which involves the partners lying on their sides and a guy entering the woman while she’s spooning him with her hands or a vibrator. This is also a good position for trying out other erogenous zones like the breasts and vulva. Just be sure to communicate with your partner(s) and keep safety in mind. Always practice new positions with consent. And remember, it may take a while to find the right positions for orgasms. Don’t give up!
Reverse Cowgirl
A variation on cowgirl, this position encourages friction against the female clitoris and may boost orgasms. The person on top can also straddle their partner and wiggle to find the right angle for penetration, which might be easier for those who have a hard time feeling a good sensation during penetrative intercourse.
It’s not recommended to stay in this position for a long time, because it can put strain on the knees and hips. But the bottom partner can easily rotate their body to find a more comfortable angle and increase pleasure as they continue to move up and down and grind. This sex position can be used for anal intercourse or with a penis, strap-on dildo, finger, or any other sex toy.
This position is especially great for those who have trouble achieving orgasms during sexual intercourse because the shaft of the partner’s penis can hit the female G-spot directly, which can trigger orgasms. And because it’s a more erotic sex position than some other traditional orgasm-boosting positions, like doggy style, this one can be great for those who need extra stimulation to reach peak pleasure.
The person on top can also take this opportunity to try out other sex toys that might make the experience even more intense, like a bullet vibrator. And, as with any new sex position, it’s important to communicate with your partner about what you’re trying and what works best for both of you.
Side Entry
If you ask women what their favorite sex position is, the answers will probably vary widely. Doggy style, for example, is great for stimulating the G-spot, while the reverse cowgirl position has the power to stimulate multiple erogenous zones. But, according to a new study, one position is better than the rest when it comes to female orgasms: missionary style, with a pillow underneath her pelvis.
The researchers, who work for private gynaecology clinic New H Medical in New York, studied the effects of different coital positions on clitoral blood flow. They used an ultrasound scanner to monitor a volunteer couple while they had sex in five popular positions. They found that the kneeling/rear entry position (which is also sometimes referred to as doggie style) produced the least amount of stimulation to the clitoral area, whereas the missionary position, with a pillow placed under the woman’s pelvis, was the most effective for orgasms.
Although the results of this study are definitely encouraging, women shouldn’t be afraid to try a variety of sex positions in order to reach orgasm. And, of course, it’s always important to practise good oral hygiene and lubrication during foreplay. But, the best way to get to orgasm might have nothing to do with sex positioning — for many women, it’s all about foreplay and clitoral stimulation.
